The term ”intellectual property rights“ refers to the exclusive rights to intangible assets such as ideas, inventions, concepts, intellectual works and information. In order to secure these rights, intangible assets usually need to be protected by property rights; most commonly in the form of patents, utility models or registered designs. In other cases authors may be protected by copyright. The holder of such rights, for instance the applicant for a patent, is free to decide on the utilisation and exploitation of the property right and to determine whether third parties may or may not use the right or whether and how utilisation rights are to be marketed (e.g. in the form of licenses).
